Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Imaging System Installation

Wednesday, Sep 20, 2023

The FAUHS Imaging Lab recently added a new piece of scientific equipment – a Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy imaging system, also known as an FTIR! Here’s how it works - during FTIR analysis, infrared light is passed through a sample and recorded by a detector. The system converts the remaining light into a spectrum, similar to a molecular fingerprint, which allows us to learn about the samples chemical properties.

This equipment was purchased with the support of the Batchelor Foundation for a project on ocean microplastics in collaboration with the Ocean First Institute (OFI). Researchers from our lab school, OFI, and FAU gathered to receive training on using the FTIR system to collect data on the specific types of plastics found in our local waterways in addition to a wide array of other research projects.
