Responsible Decision-Making

Did you know that the average person makes about 35,000 decisions each day? From simple choices like what to eat for breakfast to more complex ones like how to respond to a friend’s comment—our days are filled with decisions!

This month, we are highlighting the Florida Resiliency Characteristic of Responsible Decision-Making. This important skill involves thinking through options, considering consequences, and making choices that are respectful, safe, and aligned with personal and community values.

At Florida Atlantic Laboratory Schools, we take great pride in modeling and teaching responsible decision-making at every grade level, K–12. We believe these daily lessons shape strong, independent, and thoughtful individuals.

As parents and caregivers, we naturally want to protect and help our children. When they face challenges, we may jump in with solutions out of love and a desire to ease their path. This month, we encourage all of us to “press the pause button.” Instead of immediately offering answers, try walking your child through the decision-making process:

  1. What are your options?
  2. What might happen next?
  3. What would be the best choice and why?
  4. How would this affect others?

By guiding rather than solving, we help our children build confidence, independence, and critical thinking skills.

Check out the Responsible Decision-Making Parent Guides below for practical ways to encourage this resiliency skill at home—whether it's through daily routines, family discussions, or decision-based games.

With summer just around the corner, we wish you meaningful family moments and new adventures that fill your cup. 🌞
