Building Resilience in Students

by THE K-12 COUNSELING TEAM | Friday, Oct 28, 2022

We are excited to share all the happenings in School Counseling from elementary to middle to high school. Each level is essential to the growth and development of your child. We genuinely take the team approach at A.D. Henderson University School and FAU High School. Building Resilience in students is a crucial component throughout the levels. The Florida Department of Education is equally focused on resilience and has begun to build a toolbox for educators. Please review the 10 Tips for Building Resilience in Children and Teens in the Resilience Guide for Parents and Teens  offered by the American Psychological Association.

Elementary School

It has been a whirlwind in elementary! Ms. Jill Deskin has started lunch bunches in each grade. She has also begun two small groups in multiple grades to support students with worry and grief. Classroom lessons in child safety are also wrapping up this week. Lastly, Ms. Deskin sent out a needs assessment to teachers and parents to help get input on how the first quarter of the elementary school counseling program is going. Many thanks to those who completed the needs assessment. Parent workshops are coming soon!

Middle School

Mrs. Gigi Kean completed classroom lessons about healthy/unhealthy relationships, being an upstander and not a bystander, and The Monique Burr Foundation's Five Safety Rules. The lessons were well-received by students and teachers. Additional topics included organizational and study tips and strategies, with students sharing their best tips and techniques. Together they created a big basket of ideas they can utilize in all subject areas. Mrs. Kean also shared a quick and easy way to track paperwork going to and from school and supported this by uploading a video tutorial to her Google Classroom. Select participants completed six weekly small group sessions addressing significant life changes and bereavement. Look for the launch of middle school parent workshops in November!

High School

Thank you for supporting our parent workshops for high school students. The 10-12th graders spent the month of October in academic advisement meetings with Ms. Sheldon and Mr. Bell - November 1 is a big Common Application deadline day for our seniors. The 9th graders are completing the Universal Screener with Ms. Spaulding on November 1 and 2. Lastly, school counseling lessons are in full swing in the S2S 9th-grade classes beginning with perfectionism, stress management, and the Mind Up curriculum.
