United in Kindness, Acceptance & Inclusion
by K-12 Counseling Team | Tuesday, Oct 27, 2026
October was National Bullying Prevention Month, and October 21 is nationally recognized as Unity Day—a day dedicated to promoting kindness, acceptance, and inclusion while reminding students that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and respected. Students in all grade levels signed their name to a butterfly, signifying their pledge of kindness. All of the butterflies were added to a school-wide mural. When you visit the school, we hope you will enjoy seeing it.
At Florida Atlantic Laboratory Schools, we believe every student plays an important role in building a school environment where differences are celebrated, friendships are nurtured, and everyone feels a sense of belonging. Preventing bullying is not just a one-day event; it is an ongoing commitment that begins with the small choices we make each day.
Building Resilience Through Honesty
One of Florida’s Resiliency Characteristics is Honesty — telling the truth. Honesty helps students build trust, take responsibility for their actions, and develop healthy relationships.
Unity Day provides a meaningful opportunity to practice honesty in our interactions with others. When students witness bullying or see someone being excluded, honesty means speaking truthfully about what happened, seeking help from a trusted adult, and acknowledging when their own words or actions may have hurt someone.
Families can help children understand that being honest does not mean being unkind. It means communicating truthfully and respectfully, admitting mistakes, and having the courage to do what is right—even when it feels difficult. By combining honesty with empathy and respect, students can help create a school community where everyone feels safe and supported.
How Families Can Make a Difference
Parents and caregivers are powerful partners in helping children develop the confidence and skills to treat others with kindness. Here are a few simple ways to reinforce Unity Day and honesty at home:
- Kindergarten–Grade 2: Read a story about friendship or kindness. Ask, “Why is it important to tell the truth?” and “How can we help someone feel included?” Praise your child for being honest, even when admitting a mistake.
- Grades 3–5: Talk about what it means to be an upstander. Ask, “What could you do if you saw someone being left out or treated unfairly?” Encourage your child to tell a trusted adult what happened and explain why telling the truth matters.
- Grades 6–8: Discuss peer pressure, group dynamics, and online behavior. Explore how honesty, accountability, and respectful communication can help students navigate disagreements and respond to bullying.
- Grades 9–12: Have open conversations about respect, belonging, and responsible leadership. Encourage your teen to be truthful, take responsibility for their choices, speak up appropriately when witnessing bullying, and support peers who may feel isolated.
For students of every age, remind them that asking a trusted adult for help is a sign of strength—not weakness. If your child shares a concern about bullying, listen calmly, take the concern seriously, and work with the school to identify appropriate support.
Put Unity Into Action
This month, challenge your family to practice one small act of inclusion each day:
- Welcome someone new or invite someone to join an activity.
- Tell the truth, even when it is difficult.
- Take responsibility for mistakes and make an effort to repair hurt feelings.
- Offer encouragement to a classmate, teammate, or friend.
- Think carefully before posting, commenting, or sharing online.
- Speak up respectfully when someone is treated unfairly.
- Recognize and appreciate acts of honesty and kindness in your home and community.
At Florida Atlantic Laboratory Schools, we encourage students to remember that kindness is a choice, honesty builds trust, and unity is something we create together. By working together, families and schools can help students develop the resilience and character they need to overcome challenges and foster meaningful connections.
