FAUHS Student Reports Back from her Summer Research Experience

FAUHS senior, Cassandra Glomann ‘27, shared her experience conducting research as part of an NSF-funded program this summer. "This summer, I participated in the My Streetscape Summer Research Institute in collaboration with the Center for Smart Streetscapes, the National Science Foundation, Columbia University, and Florida Atlantic University. I specifically designed, developed, and trained the crossing-intent Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model for SmartWalk, an AI-based pedestrian detection and driver-alert system, to predict pedestrian crossings based on trends in posture, direction, distance to a given crosswalk, and proximity of nearby vehicles. From this experience, I learned how data collected from live camera video feeds can be used to prevent dangerous incidents and protect commuters daily."
